SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - A state lawmaker has introduced a bill that would require insurance companies to provide coverage for the treatment of children who have autism.
Sen. Howard Stephenson, R-Draper, says autism is a treatable disorder, but many families can't afford the treatment because their insurance doesn't cover it.
He introduced Senate Bill 43 on Thursday to require insurance companies to provide $50,000 in coverage for children younger than 9, and $25,000 in coverage for children younger than 17.
Stephenson says getting his bill through the Legislature won't be easy because of opposition from insurance companies, but he says mandating coverage for autistic children is the humane thing to do.
